Anyone Remember The Star Wars Christmas Special?

I didn't know about this until around 1996.

I was at a comic convention in Chattanooga ( Chatta-Con, I think ) and they had a copy for sale.

I will never get that $20 and that time back - ever.

August 14, 2008 - This weekend sees the release of the new animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. As most of you are probably aware of by now, the Clone Wars movie will be followed this fall by a new ongoing animated series of the same name on the Cartoon Network. Here at IGN TV, we are going to lead up to the debut of the new TV series by looking back at the history of Star Wars on television. For our first segment, we take you back to the first version of Star Wars on TV… and to perhaps the darkest time in Star Wars history – to a title that makes babies weep and the strongest men shudder, and has even suffered the snark of George Lucas from time to time. Yes, it's time to look back at The Star Wars Holiday Special.

The Star Wars Holiday Special is epically bad. It's amazingly bad. It's a special kind of bad that one doesn't just come across that often. The last 3 ( which are in reality the "first three" ) STAR WARS films sucked.

I was caught up with the notion back in 1999 - when The Phantom Menace came out - that simply because it was a "Star Wars" movie, that it was great. I watched it three times and came to the swift realization that Lucas has completely destroyed something fantastic that he created all those years ago.

In poiint-of-fact, Lucas had very little input into the "holiday special". But, considering hindsight is the perpetually clear-eyed bastard that it is, those of us that saw the "holiday special" might have forseen that Lucas would eventually screw things up in a big way.

The only portion of the "special" that is in any way even moderately redeemable is the animated portion where the world got it's first glimps of this guy:
