This is, quite obviously, something else that is done at the C&L website on Fridays. I have offered by suggestions quite often but they haven't been considered yet - at least I don't think so. But just in case, I thought I would take it upon myself to create my own "rip-offs" thread each week to show what I think are either blatant or coincidental cheats in music.
Our first selection features a not-so-well-known goth band versus The Smashing Pumpkins.

Friday Afternoon Tracks feat. Robert Plant & Queen
From the Concert For Life. "Thank You" / "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"
As a kid, I loved Queen. I have my mom and older sister to thank for that. Mom had several Queen LPs and my sister and I would play them when she would come and visit, dancing around the room and laughing.
The other band that I couldn't get enough of as a child was Zeppelin. My father told me that he and mom would play Physical Graffiti in order to get me to calm down when I was little. When my parents divorced, I didn't get to listen to Zep unless I was visiting my dad.
Seeing Plant on stage, performing with Queen, you get this awesome feeling that you don't normally get. And you definately don't get it listening to the overly processed and key-adjusted clap-trap that's on commercial radio now.

Wedesday Night Jams featuring Big Wreck
Big Wreck was one of those bands that had a lot going for them.
Their initial release "In Loving Memory Of...." was one of the greatest LPs of the late 90s. Alas, they fell prey to MTV. After heavy rotation of their tracks "That Song" and "Inhale" ( from the bands follow-up album "The Pleasure And The Greed" ) in 1999, early 2000 and 2001, the band disbanded in 2002.
The track "That Song" not only has a fantastic riff, but Thornley's vocal presence evokes the songs message in an amazingly resonant way: when you lose someone that you love to another, there's always "that song" that play on the radio. You try to tell everyone around you that you're fine, that you'll move on. But you keep listening to that song, because it reminds you of them.
And, from this writer's perspective, it provided more than the occassionaly cold-comfort on more than a few nights.
It skirts the edges of pop, metal, and garage in a way that no other track of it's time did.

Big Wreck's follow-up single was "Inhale". The video lacked the imagry and simplicity of "That Song" and somewhat seemed to be a protoypical video that was showcased on MTV - when and if they did show videos. Perhaps that was the intent of the band and director, but who really knows.
The song itself is wonderful without the accompanying video.
"Blown Wide Open"
A much more fine-tuned track. The video is far less invasive and over-produced as "Inhale", allowing the song and the band to be far more present.

Since Ian Thornley is Canadian, the band's biggest commercial success was in Canada rather than the United States. The album's subsequent singles, "Blown Wide Open" and "That Song", were not as successful on the American charts as "The Oaf" had been, but in Canada they were both Top Ten hits.
In October 2001, Big Wreck played a special show at Toronto's Roy Thomson Hall accompanied by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Uzume Taiko Ensemble of drummers, with The Tragically Hip's Paul Langlois and Robby Baker and guitarist Eric Johnson also making appearances.
The band's second album The Pleasure and the Greed (released in 2001) was marred by poor marketing and was not as big a hit as their debut album, especially in the United States. The band broke up a year later.
Thornley moved back to Toronto, launching the band Thornley. Doherty is now living in Camlachie, a small community near Sarnia, Ontario, and is now teaching guitar to kids in that area. Doherty has also gone on to be in the indie band Death of 8, but the other band members have not yet emerged with new projects.
Hard rock band Submersed and American Idol winner David Cook have both cited the band as an influence.

There has always been something about this band that made me hold out hope for rock music. Perhaps it was the fact that Maynard James Keenan was involved, or that the guitarist had once worked as a guitar tech for Nine Inch Nails, or that they once had a woman on bass - I love a chick with a bass guitar.
It's been several years since APC has even toured. It's been a long time since the band has been active, at all.
But, i'm sure that a time will come when they will return. Until then, i've still got some great music that never gets old.

He's skating dangerously close to that edge that so many aged rockers find themselves. You're not quite the stadium-filling act that you were years ago but you haven't exactly been relegated to playing the Holiday-Inn-Express-Bar-And-Grill circuit.
Come to think of it, are there any members from the "Use Your Illusion" days still in the band?
As an intersting sidenote, having your song in the film Body Of Lies - albeit a snippet during the credits - isn't something to snort at either. Ridley Scott is normally very active in the entire production process, from principle to post. Is this to say that Scott picked Axl's latest musical venture as the closing piece to his latest film? I'm not sure.
Considering that I was still in high-school when GnR had their last studio album out it will be interesting to see what this is going to be like.

The set will be a Best Buy exclusive and will be available Sunday, November 23, rather than the usual Tuesday.

Tuesday Music For Lunch feat. Corrossion Of Conformity
COC has been a favorite of mine since the early 90s.
Some of their fanbase brushed them off when "Wiseblood" came out, simply because it wasn't "the same" as anything they had done previously.
It's great when bands can experiment with new sounds. But, getting caught in a "let's make this as radio friendly as we can" mode ( a la Metallica during the Bob Rock as producer era ) can be a career killer.
Redemption City was one of my favorite tracks off the Wiseblood album.

Thursday Night Music Times feat. WEEZER
The first time that I heard this band was my first day of college. I'm not entirely sure why that is even relevant now, but it makes me realize that either this band is starting to get old, or perhaps I am. While both are theoretically plausible, the later seems more apt to happen first.

Kentucky Rock Band Meets Noisecore Remix
My good friend, former roommate, and one-time bandmate David is the keyboardist for the Bowling Green, Kentucky band Technology vs. Horse.
Just like the Charlie Kauffman penned script ( Adaptation ) that their name is derived from, the band is more than meets the eye.
This remix of their track 669 is an homage to not only the spirit of the original song, but to two of my major musical influences: cEVIN Key and D.R. Gottell ( both of Skinny Puppy and Download ).
