"Extreme? you really think hes an extremist? I mean, he's clearly a liberal," interviewer Dave Helling asks.
"That's his voting record," McCain responds. "All i said was his voting record, and that is more to the left than the announced Socialist in the United States Senate, Bernie Sanders of Vermont."
"Do you think hes a socialist, Barack Obama?" Helling asks.
McCain responds with a with a shrug, "I don't know."

This is one of the conservative movements favorite things to talk about - what Obama "might be".
Ooooo, scary.
He's got a funny name, he might have been a Muslim, he lived in another country, ooooooo.
Give me a fucking break.
He's been labeled by The National Journal as the most liberal senator.
But, what does that really mean?
How can someone define who is to the "left" or even the "right" of you. The National Journal is trying to tell you what your viewpoint is in order to define who/what Obama is to you.
But, more to the point, what do you think Socialism means?
Far too many people in the Republican party toss out the word a know that they don't have to explain it - they know you'll be afraid of it. It's just like with the word "Fascism". To them, that has nothing to do with the Fascisst party or Mussolini but is just a more fanciful way of calling someone "bad".
By strict definition, Socialism means:
a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
Conservatives use the term to stoke fears within people that they are going to have their jobs, their homes, their money, their very lives taken away from them.
It's gone so far, that if you are for a "fair tax" system - meaning that the taxes that you pay should be proportionate to what you make - then you are advocating "Socialism".
