Did They, Or Did It Just Seem That Way?

The media's - and the average citizen's - fascination with hurricanes since the two sister-storms Rita and Katrina blasted into the gulf-coast 3 year ago is to be expected. We love drama, provided it's not our houses and pets and loved ones that are floating away in a surge of brown water and debris.

Natural disasters tend to bring out the best - or worst - in each of us.

When you mix a storm that threatens a thriving coastal region with a Presidential Election, then that's a cocktail with some bite to it.

When you politicize a potential natural disaster - the loss of homes, business, and life - it becomes apparent that you really aren't as concerned with the people that the disaster is affecting.

Notice how quickly George W. Bush ran down to New Orleans. Notice how John McCain was quick to say 'lets hold off on the convention'.

Gustav landed some 85 miles west of NOLA.

Everything can go back to "normal" mode I guess for The Republicans.

One can only speculate as to what Bush was thinking when he looked at the television and saw that storm looming ever closer to New Orleans. One can only assume what his staff were suggesting to him.

The same can be said for McCain, as he was enjoying his birthday with Bush when Katrina made landfall back in 2005.

Was there a "hope" somewhere in their hearts that they could somehow erase the memories of their failures before and after Katrina?

Were the Republicans hoping that New Orleans would be destroyed, again, in order to create the illusion that they cared the first time?

I guess we'll never know.
