A Constitutional Ammendment Protecting "Spanking"?

You think I'm joking?

I'm not

Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) last week introduced a bill in the House to amend the U.S. Constitution to permanently “enshrine” in American society an inviolable set of parents’ rights. The bill had 70 co-sponsors, all Republicans, including Minority Whip Eric Cantor and Minority Leader John A. Boehner.

What is it with conservative Republican's desire to add amendments to the Constitution?

As a lifetime resident of Michigan, I would like to extend my apologies to the rest of the nation for this goof. Unfortunately, due to his district which is made up almost entirely of ultra-conservative Dutch Reformed folks, he can do and say just about anything (and he has, by the way) and still easily get re-elected.

They don't care about spanking or amendments. What they want to do is get the sane people in government to block the amendment, then the conservatives can say, "Look, the government is trying to tell you how to raise your kids. It's just more socialism." It's just another way to try to make "liberal government" look like it's trying to regulate the minutiae of your life. Even though they're the ones who brought it up in the first place.

I agree with Tom W. The next amendment-worthy crisis will guarantee people the right to swat flies. Glenn Beck will no doubt weep.

Mr. "Bathes-in-bronzer" Boehner is from my native Ohio. I didn't leave; I escaped.
