Style Over Substance

Whenever Barack Obama gives an unscripted answer to a question asked of him at either townhall events or during pressers, the conservative media have to spin so hard that they surely get dizzy to the point of nearly projectile vomiting on their Limbaugh/Beck scrapbooks.

Recently, Obama was asked about healthcare reform and new taxation. His answer was over 15 minutes in length, full of substantive and verifiable information. Charles Krauthammer, ever eager to present himself as an august sense of reason and a wise mentor to the elite within the conservative movement, completely ignored all substance and simply stated that the answer was "too long".

It’s only nine times the length of the Gettysburg Address, and Lincoln was answering an easier question, the higher purpose of the union and soldiers who fell in battle. The president had an easy answer. He could have said I wanted to make history with health care and to do it I have to raise your taxes. … End of answer.

I suppose these people are pining for the days of Bush's colloquialism and "drinkin' buddy" blatherings.

Think Progress rightly notes that lengthy answers such as the one Obama presented are necessary.

Perhaps all the misinformation that has been emanating from media outlets such as the Washington Post and Fox News on health care reform this past year is what required the President to make such a detailed response in order to set the record straight.

Conservatives need to realize that answers to healthcare reform, national security, education, or any of a variety of issue important to this country can't be contained on misspelled signs at Tea Bagger events. But, as always, had Obama given a staccato, 7 word, answer, Krauthammer and other detractors would have claimed he wasn't clear enough. They are predictable, aren't they?
